Here are some important questions to ask yourself during your college search:

  1. Are you looking for a Public or private college?
  2. Large, medium or small?  Which size would your student best fit in at?
  3. How far away?  Within Texas?  Within 100 miles?
  4. In-state vs. out-of-state tuition?
  5. Small town or urban campus?  What is your student used to?
  6. Where do most students  live?  On or off campus?
  7. Does the college have the major you want to study?  How strong is that particular program?

When you have list of colleges that interest you, it’s time to narrow them down. Divide your colleges into 3 categories based on how hard they will be to get accepted into:

  1. Safety schools - colleges that will be easy to get into based on grades and test scores.
  2. Realistic schools - colleges that you have a decent chance of getting into.
  3. Reach Schools - colleges you want to apply to that will be tougher to get into.

Once you have your list of schools to apply to, then it is time to develop a strategy to improve your chances of getting in.  Consider taking the following steps:

  1. Find out who the college recruiters are for each college on your list?
  2. Contact each college recruiter by email or phone to introduce yourself.  Ask them if they have any suggestions on how to learn more about the college and to improve your college resume.
  3. Plan and schedule a college visit.  Make sure you visit the specific college and department for the major you are interested in.
  4. Try to speak with others from your area that may be current students or college alumni to find out what their experiences were like.
